Precise Laser Dentistry

Women in yellow checking smileDentists have been user lasers for more than 20 years to treat a number of dental and oral health problems. Lasers use a special light to delivery energy, which can be directed at tissue for precise cutting (or actually vaporization of tissue) during a surgical procedure. At Green Hills Dental Center, we have three types of lasers that we use to perform oral surgeries that are far faster, typically cause less discomfort and eliminate the need for stitches. Moreover, the recovery time is shortened and much easier. These 3 lasers are:

Laser is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A CO2 laser penetrates soft tissue less than a millimeter and provides a very precise cut and very little bleeding after surgery. It also shortens procedure time. A Diode laser works better on darker tissues and nearly eliminates bleeding in most patients. It takes a few seconds longer than the CO2 laser but requires touch to affect tissue and therefore is less affected by movement of the patient. The Erbium YAG laser is a fast laser with minimal penetration that can be use on teeth as well as tissue and in some cases can replace the need for the dental drill. We have multiple lasers available so we can select the laser that will be best for the patient being treated and the specific procedure being done.

Reshape Your Smile with Laser Dentistry

Lasers are used to gently sculpt gums and other soft tissue in order to create a more balanced smile. Some people, for example, have gum tissue that extends too far over their teeth. As a result, their teeth appear to be small and they have what is often referred to as a gummy smile or short teeth. So, although the teeth may be healthy and functional, they create a less than attractive smile that makes some people self-conscious.

To correct this, we use laser gum recontouring to sculpt a more natural looking gum line. As excess tissue is removed, the tooth appears longer and less gums are visible in the smile. After laser surgery to reshape your smile, you may notice that yours gums are slightly reddened and tender for a few days. However, the discomfort should be minimal and won’t be likely to interfere with your normal activities. Most clients report minimal to no discomfort. The results are instant and you can have a new smile in one visit.

Lasers are used for many other procedures as well, such as:
